These costs--horrible as they are--are mostly the hard accounting costs in the short run. The cost of turning our back on developing countries, the cost of undermining public health, the costs of making America unfriendly to the immigrant talent and energy that has always fueled our nation, the cost of ruining relationships with long time friends and allies, the cost of tearing up trade relationships, the costs cutting research and educational supports, the costs of pretending that environmental issues aren't real and, most importantly, the costs of squandering our nation's moral good will are likely to swamp the simple graft of Donald J. Trump. That the nation has let an eight-year old run the country is bad enough; that Congress and the Supreme Court has failed to reign him in raises the distinct possibility that the era of American exceptionalism is crashing to an end. Pity the grandkids.
